Softball beats Ursuline again, but drops re-match with Cedarville

Box Score

The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team's season came to an end on Friday evening in Xenia, Ohio. The Panthers defeated Ursuline 4-2 in the first elimination game, but faltered again to Cedarville 5-4 in the second game. KWC ends the season with an overall record of 25-23.

Elimination round vs. Ursuline

The Panthers didn't want their season to come to an end today, and it showed right from the beginning of the game. KWC won both meetings with the Arrows this year, with wins in back-to-back days.

Mackenzie Weedman singled through the left side, bringing home Meredith Daunhauer for the first run of the game in the bottom of the first.
Shelby Tennant singled to right scoring Weedman for the 2-0 advantage.

Later on in the game, KWC would push out its lead to 4-0. Courtney Lockwood knocked a triple to right field, which scored Alexis Chapman. Samantha Marksbury hit a solo homerun for the other run.

Ursuline closed in on the Panthers' lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run homerun to cut the score to 4-2.

Kentucky Wesleyan would hold the Arrows scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the victory.

Jessica Carmon started the game on the mound and went 5.2 innings. Casey Smith came in for the rest of the game, and recorded the save. It is the fifth time Smith has collected a save this year.

Daunhauer led the Panthers' offense with a 3-4 performance from the plate. Tennant also tallied two hits in the game. Tennant, Marksbury, Lockwood, and Weedman all finished with one RBI apiece.

Elimination round vs. Cedarville

The Panthers were hoping to stave off elimination again with a re-match against the Yellow Jackets. After a scoreless game through four innings, Kentucky Wesleyan broke through with a huge fifth inning.

Mackenzie Weedman smacked a grand slam to put KWC ahead 4-0. Cedarville responded with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the game up at 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cedarville won the game 5-4 on a walk-off double.

Maci Brown pitched four innings and struck out three. Casey Smith pitched the remainder of the contest.

With the loss, the Panthers' 2016 campaign comes to an end.
