Softball splits doubleheader with Salem International on Senior Day

The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team split a doubleheader on Sunday at Foster Field against Salem International in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers won game one 8-0 (F/5), but lost game two 8-3. Kentucky Wesleyan had won nine straight games before dropping game two, which ended their winning streak.

The Panthers end the regular season with an overall record of (23-21, 16-6 G-MAC).

Game one

Kaci Ovelgoenner, Alexis Chapman, Samantha Marksbury, Kayla Norris, and Mackenzie Weedman were all playing their final two games at Foster Field.

It was a solid start for the Panthers, as they jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after the first inning. Weedman hit a double scoring Meredith Daunhauer for the first run of the game. KWC scored the next two runs on errors, but then Delaney Mixer brought home Samantha Marksbury off an RBI single.

Kentucky Wesleyan would add two runs each in the bottom of the third and fourth. Kaci Ovelgoenner scored her second run of the game on an error, and then Alexis Chapman connected on an RBI single to bring home Marksbury.

In the fourth, Samantha Marksbury smacked a two-run homer to put the Panthers up 8-0. Marksbury led KWC in game one with a 2-3 performance from the plate, and a team-high four RBI's. She also scored three runs.

Mackenzie Weedman finished the game going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Jessica Carmon threw five shutout innings, giving up just two hits in the contest. Carmon is now 4-0 in starts on the mound this season. She also struck out four batters in the game.
 
Game two

The Panthers were looking for the series sweep, but in this game the Tigers were able to produce offense for the first time in the series.

Salem jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but KWC scored two runs in the bottom half of the first to tie the game.

The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the third on two hits and two errors. Salem led 6-2, and then extended their advantage out to 8-2 after scoring two more runs in the top of the fourth.

Alexis Chapman hit an RBI single scoring Hannah Slack to cut the deficit down to 8-3, but that would be the closest the Panthers would get.

Meredith Daunhauer, Alexis Chapman, and Delaney Mixer each posted two hits apiece in the game.

Autumn Grady started the game on the mound for the Panthers. Grady lasted two innings, and gave up six runs. Casey Smith pitched in relief for the final five innings of the game. Smith struck out three hitters.

Kentucky Wesleyan will prepare for the G-MAC softball tournament in Ohio, which will begin this coming week.
