Softball wins fifth straight with doubleheader sweep at home against Ohio Valley

The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team won both games at home on Saturday against Ohio Valley at Foster Field in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers have now won five consecutive games, including winning eight out of their past nine.

The Panthers won game one by a score of 2-0, and won the second game 5-4. KWC improves its record on the season to (11-17, 6-2 G-MAC).

In game one, both teams struggled to consistently get hits and put runners on base. Kentucky Wesleyan finished with only three hits in the entire contest. Meredith Daunhauer collected a team-high two hits, while Jessica Carmon recorded the other hit for the Panthers in the game. Mackenzie Weedman picked up the lone RBI in the game.

KWC scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Casey Smith threw a gem on the mound for the Panthers. Smith went all seven innings, and struck out four, as she tossed a complete game shutout. Smith gave up just four hits in the game, and also improved her overall record as a pitcher this year to 4-8.

 

In the second game, the Panthers' bats were able to come up with a few more hits in the game. Kentucky Wesleyan started things off in the bottom of the second, after a double from Samantha Marksbury put KWC on the board.

Kentucky Wesleyan added another run in the bottom of the third. The Panthers had a huge inning in the bottom of the fifth, where they scored three runs.

Ohio Valley trailed 5-2 heading into the sixth inning , but scored two runs in that inning to cut to deficit to just one.

Casey Smith came in to close the game out to record the save and preserve the victory. Maci Brown got the start for KWC. She went three innings, and gave up just two hits. Jessica Carmon pitched 2.2 innings in relief before Smith came in for the save. Smith collected her third save of the season.

Seven different Panther players picked up at least one hit in the game. Courtney Lockwood produced a team-high two hits. Delaney Mixer, Kaci Ovelgoenner, Samantha Marksbury, and Kayla Norris all tallied in one RBI apiece. Marksbury and Lockwood each finished with one double apiece, while Ovelgoenner and Mackenzie Weedman both collected a triple each in the contest.

Kentucky Wesleyan will be back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the final two games of the series at Foster Field. The second game will follow 30 minutes after completion of game one.
