Softball takes care of business, sweeps series at Alderson Broaddus

The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team collected two more wins in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Alderson Broaddus in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers won game one 4-0, and took game two 7-1. With all four wins in the series, the Panthers marked their second series sweep of the year.

KWC is now back to .500 with an overall record of 20-20. The Panthers improve their G-MAC record to 13-5. Kentucky Wesleyan has also won six consecutive games.

 
In the first game, the Panthers scored their first run in the top of the first, after Samantha Marksbury singled to centerfield, which scored Meredith Daunhauer.

In the sixth, KWC added three more runs of insurance. Mackenzie Weedman hit her second homerun of the series on a solo shot to put the Panthers ahead 2-0. Mallory Nease singled to center and brought home Kaci Ovelgoenner, who reached base on a walk. Kayla Norris grounded out to short, but picked up an RBI as Marksbury crossed the plate.

The Panthers as a team collected six hits in the contest. Marksbury led the Panthers with a 2-3 performance from the plate, along with an RBI.

Casey Smith threw another gem on the mound for the Panthers. Smith threw her second straight complete game shutout of the series. Smith has thrown four complete game shutouts this season. She also struck out four batters in the game.

 

Alexis Chapman got things rolling for the Panthers in the second game. Chapman hit an RBI single scoring Kaci Ovelgoenner in the top half of the second. The Panthers would score three more runs in the third.

Mackenzie Weedman recorded an RBI off an error as KWC took a 2-0 lead. Kaci Ovelgoenner and Samantha Marksbury both collected RBI singles to score the next two runs. Meredith Daunhauer and Weedman both scored the runs.

In the top half of the seventh, Kentucky Wesleyan scored three more runs to hold a 7-1 lead. Mallory Nease hit an RBI single, and then Delaney Mixer snatched a two-run RBI double to put the Panthers well ahead heading into the final inning of play.

Maci Brown started game two and threw another solid game. Brown recorded the win, and lasted five innings. She gave up just one earned run in the outing.

Jessica Carmon came in as a relief pitcher for the final two innings. Carmon went straight to work, and gave up no hits.

The Panthers as a team totaled 16 hits in the game. Meredith Daunhauer and Kaci Ovelgoenner each went 3-4 in the contest. Chapman, Norris, Mixer, Marksbury, and Nease all had two hits apiece. Mixer placed two RBI's for the Panthers.

Kentucky Wesleyan will be back in action on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Southern Indiana. The first game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
