Softball gets back on track with doubleheader sweep at Oakland City

After dropping two games at home to Trevecca on Tuesday, Kentucky Wesleyan bounced back with two victories. The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team collected two wins on the road on Thursday at Oakland City in non-conference play. The Panthers defeated the Mighty Oaks 6-1, and 13-3 (F/5). Kentucky Wesleyan improves its record on the season to 16-20.

In the first game, Kentucky Wesleyan answered with a run in the top half of the first. Courtney Lockwood doubled to center, and was brought home on an RBI single from Shelby Tennant to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.

Oakland City would tie the game back up at 1-1 after an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Neither team would score again until sixth inning.

The Panthers snatched three runs in the sixth inning off four hits. Meredith Daunhauer got on base to start the inning off with a single. After she stole second base, Delaney Mixer brought her home with an RBI single to give KWC the lead back. Courtney Lockwood then drilled a two-run homerun as Kentucky Wesleyan went up 4-1.

In the seventh, the Panthers scored two more insurance runs off four hits. Delaney Mixer knocked a double to center, scoring both Maci Brown and Meredith Daunhauer.

Autumn Grady pitched the first three innings of the game, and finished with a no-decision. She struck out four in her outing.

Casey Smith pitched the final four innings, and recorded the win. It now marks Smith's six win of the season on the mound. She gave up just two hits in four innings.

Kentucky Wesleyan's offense was led by Delaney Mixer and Courtney Lockwood. Mixer finished game one going 2-4 with three RBI's, while Lockwood went 4-4 with two RBI's. Daunhauer also finished with two hits in the contest. KWC as a team totaled 12 hits.

 

In the second game, the Panthers cruised. Kentucky Wesleyan scored four runs in the top of the first off five hits. Courtney Lockwood started it all off with an RBI double scoring Meredith Daunhauer. Later on in the inning, Shelby Tennant crushed a three-run homerun to put KWC up 4-0.

Kentucky Wesleyan would score two more runs in the second. Mackenzie Weedman whacked a two-run homer to left, scoring Lockwood as the Panthers led big at 6-1.

The Panthers poured it on in the fourth and fifth innings with seven runs combined. Daunhauer scored another run off an error, and Kaci Ovelgoenner joined the homerun parade with her own two-run shot down the left field line.

Alexis Chapman collected an RBI double in the fifth to put the Panthers up 10-1. Kayla Norris hit a single to first to bring home the second run of the inning. Lockwood singled to left to score the third run, and then Ovelgoenner got on a base through a fielder's choice, scoring Norris to end the ball game at 13-3.

Lockwood led the Panthers again with a 3-4 outing. She also registered two RBI's. Ovelgoenner and Tennant both finished with three RBI's apiece, and both also went 2-4. Mixer also snatched two hits in the contest.

Jessica Carmon went all five innings on the mound, and is now a perfect 3-0 this season.

Kentucky Wesleyan will travel to West Virginia tomorrow, as they prepare for a four game series at Alderson Broaddus.
