The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team swept Cedarville on Saturday's doubleheader at Foster Field in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers won game won by a score of 10-9, and took game two by a score of 75. Kentucky Wesleyan finishes the four game series by winning three of the four games.
The Panthers have now won three straight games, and improve their overall record to (9-17, 4-2 G-MAC).
In the first game, Kentucky Wesleyan got off to a bang on offense, with five runs scored in the first inning. The Panthers also had another huge inning in the bottom of the third, where they also scored five runs.
Kaci Ovelgoenner hit another two-run homerun in the game, making it her second homerun of the series. Jessica Carmon recorded two hits, two RBI's, and also scored two runs. Courtney Lockwood brought in three RBI's off of a three run homerun in the third inning. Samantha Marksbury also scored two runs, along with two RBI's.
Kentucky Wesleyan led 10-4 heading into the top of the seventh, but Cedarville made a comeback attempt with five runs scored in the inning. The Panthers were able to hold off the Yellow Jackets for the win.
Maci Brown recorded her third win from the mound this week. Brown, who was recently coming off of a no-hitter on Friday night, struck out six batters in five innings of work on Saturday. Autumn Grady came in to pitch in the sixth, and struck out two. Casey Smith collected the save in the seventh inning to preserve the Panthers' victory, after a furious late charge from the Yellow Jackets.
In game two, the Panthers yet again got off to another hot start. Kentucky Wesleyan dropped five runs again in the bottom of the first inning to open up a comfortable lead.
The Panthers yet again had a large lead heading into the top of the seventh, with a 7-2 advantage. The Yellow Jackets once again refused to go away easily. Cedarville scored three runs in the inning, and had runners in scoring position to potentially tie the game, but KWC grabbed two huge outs to end the game and the weekend series.
Mackenzie Weedman posted a team-high three hits, and also scored two runs in the game. Kayla Norris also added two hits and two RBI's in the contest.
Pitcher Casey Smith got the start for game two, and went six innings. Smith recorded the win, and Jessica Carmon, who came in as a relief pitcher, collected the save.
Kentucky Wesleyan will next be in action against Trevecca on March 30th in Nashville.
