The Kentucky Wesleyan softball team will begin their 2016 season on Saturday against Bellarmine at Knights Field in Louisville. The game has been tabbed as a double header with the first pitch beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
The Panthers were selected to finish second in the G-MAC after the pre-season poll was released.
Bellarmine is 2-2 so far this year, after splitting double-headers with Trevecca and Lee. Kentucky Wesleyan went 25-15 last season, and also went 14-6 in G-MAC play.
Head Coach
Miles Mallette talked about being voted second in the pre-season poll: "I think that it is probably a good spot for us. Obviously we are chasing Trevecca, and they have a really good squad. We have a lot of returners coming back, so it should be an interesting year."
The Panthers return several players with valuable experience.
Mallette spoke on the key returnees, "I'm blessed to have five seniors. Several of them are going to be really impactful. We also have a solid freshmen class coming in. We've got a good pitcher, a few good hitters, and a transfer who is going to play second for us."
Mallette on what his most reliable strength of the team will be, "It's really interesting this year, because I've never really had any pitching depth, but we've got five pitchers on the staff now. Our defense is strong, because we are so senior laden. I think the offense is going to be better than it was last year. Overall I think the team is balanced, and is better than it was last year."
When asked about the goals for this season, Mallette kept it brief and to the point, "Win the conference title. It's as simple as that. That's what our goal is. Anything less would be a disappointment."Â
