Kentucky Wesleyan fell in overtime to Ohio Valley 73-65 on Thursday evening in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play in Vienna, Wva. The Panthers fall to (15-9, 8-5 G-MAC) on the season. KWC is also now 4-4 on the road this season. Kentucky Wesleyan's only lead of the game was at three points early in the first quarter. Shicole Watts had a huge game for OVU. She finished with 29 points, 17 rebounds, and seven blocks in the contest.
The Panthers got off to a slow start offensively, but were able to keep it tight with Ohio Valley in the first quarter. Kentucky Wesleyan trailed 16- 14 after the first quarter of play.
Kentucky Wesleyan struggled to find baskets in the second quarter, and only produced seven points. Ohio Valley shot the ball much better and were able to open up a double digit lead at halftime at 32-21. The Panthers connected on just eight field goals in the first half, and shot 29% from the floor as a team. KWC also committed 13 turnovers in the first half.
The Panthers played much better in the second half. However, they found themselves in a big hole early in the third quarter, as they trailed by 18 points at 39-21. Kentucky Wesleyan dug deep, and never gave up. The Panthers ended the quarter on a 9-1 run to cut the lead down to 10 at 47-37 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, the Panthers dominated the quarter on both sides of the ball. KWC completed a 9-0 run late in the fourth with points from Brittany Wells, Jill Jones, and Bria Wright to close the gap down to one possession. Brittany Wells missed a late opportunity with five seconds left, but Bria Wright grabbed the offensive board, and hit a shot inside the paint to even the score at 58-58 to force an overtime period.
In overtime, OVU got off to a quick start. Asia Coates hit an early jumper, but the Fighting Scots capped off a 14-0 run to open the game at 72-60 with just 30 seconds left. The Panthers scored five in the final 30 seconds, but it wasn't enough.
Three Panthers finished in double figures for Kentucky Wesleyan. Brittany Wells led the way once again with 13 points. Jade Mills-Harris finished in double figures for the second time this season with 11. Jill Jones also added 10. Bria Wright recorded eight points and also brought in eight rebounds. Jennifer Walker-Crawford chipped in with six points, and she also collected eight rebounds. Jill Jones dished out a team-high six assists in the contest.
Kentucky Wesleyan finished the game shooting 31% from the floor. KWC also only knocked down four three pointers throughout the game. Ohio Valley was able to out-rebound the Panthers 43-35. The Panthers' defense was able to force 32 turnovers on the Fighting Scots.
