The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team fell at home on Thursday evening to Davis & Elkins 61-53 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. With the loss, Kentucky Wesleyan falls to (14-8, 7-4 G-MAC) on the season. The Panthers as a team shot 27% from the field throughout the contest. KWC has yet to win a game this season when they shoot under 30% from the floor. The Panthers home record also slips to 9-3.
In the first quarter, Davis & Elkins used short runs to build an early advantage. The Senators ended the first quarter on a 10-2 run and led 17-9. In the second, D&E continued to score with ease inside the paint, and had the game under control. KWC shot just 7-16 from the free throw line in the first half, and 7-25 as a team. KWC had trouble creating and knocking down open shots on offense. The Senators led 34-24 at halftime, and scored 22 points inside the paint.
Kentucky Wesleyan made a push early in the third, as they started the quarter on an 11-2, and cut D&E's lead to 36-35. The Senators would finish the quarter on a strong note, and led KWC by 10 at 50-40 heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, the Panthers fell back down into the double digit hole, as their offense continued to struggle. The Panthers would make one final push in the final minutes of the game, and cut the lead down to six with under a minute to go. Kentucky Wesleyan had a couple of opportunities late to try and even the score, but fell just short.
Brittany Wells led KWC in scoring with 17 points on7-16 shooting. She also recorded three steals. Bria Wright posted her first double-double of the season with 11 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Wright also posted three steals in the contest. Jennifer Walker-Crawford also added seven points.
KWC finished the game shooting just 53% from the foul line, as they shot only 15-28. The Panthers also struggled from long range, as they shot just 6-21. The Senators also out-rebounded Kentucky Wesleyan 43-32 in the game. On a more positive note, the Panthers were able to force Davis & Elkins into committing 26 turnovers, and converted 27 points off of those turnovers.
Kentucky Wesleyan will be back in action on Saturday, when they play host to G-MAC opponent Alderson Broaddus in what will be the final home game of the season for the Panthers. The game has also been tabbed as Senior Day.
