The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team took down Trevecca 63-49 on Friday evening in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play at the Sportscenter. The Panthers used their hard-nosed defense through all four quarters of play to hold the Trojans to 31% shooting from the field, and 12% from three point range. With the win, Kentucky Wesleyan improves to (14-7, 7-3 G-MAC) on the season. The Panthers are now 9-2 in home games this season. KWC never trailed throughout the contest for the second time this week.
In the first half, the Panthers found their offense early and often from beyond the three point line. Kentucky Wesleyan made four three pointers in the quarter, and Brittany Wells connected on back-to-back trey's to extend KWC's lead. The Panthers lead 23-16 after the first quarter. KWC continued its dominating play in the second quarter, as the Panthers continued to share the ball across the perimeter. Katie Miller and Jade Mills-Harris knocked down long range shots to give the Panthers six made three's in the first half. Trevecca struggled to find any offense, and found themselves in a double digit hole with KWC up 35-24 at halftime.
Both teams struggled to find any offense in the third quarter. The Panthers found easy baskets from Bria Wright and Brittany Wells, but KWC would go scoreless for over four minutes of game time. Katie Miller knocked down two critical three's late in the quarter to give the Panthers offense a boost, as they held their 11 point advantage going into the fourth.
In the final quarter of play, the Panthers got up 50-36, but Trevecca would attempt a comeback. The Trojans were able to hold KWC scoreless from the 8:36 mark to the 4:25 mark of the game. Trevecca would go on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to four at 50-46.
In the final four minutes, the Panthers would end the game on a 14-3 run. Brittany Wells started the run on huge three from the corner, which put the Panthers ahead by seven. Jennifer Walker-Crawford scored six points in the final minutes of the game, as Trevecca was unable to score. The Panthers' defense was on full display in the fourth. Jill Jones drew a charge and then came up with a huge block to prevent an easy basket to ultimately end any chance for Trevecca to comeback.
As a team, the Panthers out-rebounded Trevecca by a wide margin of 45-28. KWC connected on 10 three point field goals, which is the third time this season where the Panthers have made at least 10 three pointers in a contest. Kentucky Wesleyan shot nearly 50% from three point range. The Panthers also forced the Trojans into committing 19 turnovers in the game.
Brittany Wells led all scorers with 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the field. Katie Miller knocked down three, three point field goals, and finished with 11 points. Erin Dorn also cracked into double figures scoring with 10 points. Jennifer Walker-Crawford also added nine points and nine rebounds. Bria Wright led KWC with a team-high 12 rebounds. Addie Reimbold also brought in eight rebounds for the Panthers. Jill Jones dished out a team-high six assists in the contest.
KWC will be back in action next Thursday against G-MAC opponent Davis & Elkins at the Sportscenter. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
