Women’s basketball wins sixth straight with 62-58 road victory at UMSL

Kentucky Wesleyan came away with an impressive 62-58 road victory over Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers have now compiled six consecutive victories and improve their overall record on the year to now 6-1. Kentucky Wesleyan also defeated UMSL earlier in the season, 72-66 in Nashville.

How it happened
Kentucky Wesleyan and UMSL both started off slow, and had trouble getting into an offensive rhythm. Early in the second quarter the score was tight at 15-14.
The Panthers' offense began to flow after a 13-5 run midway through the second quarter gave KWC a 28-19 advantage.

Kentucky Wesleyan remained out in front and led 33-23 at halftime. Eight of the nine Panther players who saw action on the floor in the first half scored.

In the third quarter, KWC's offense went through a cold period. The Tritons closed the deficit down to a one possession game at 46-43 heading into the fourth. The Panthers were out-scored 20-13 in the quarter.

The Tritons made things tough for the Panthers, and even cut the lead down to two at one point, but KWC never trailed in the second half.

Late in the fourth, Jasmine Shelt connected on a layup and then drilled a huge three pointer to put the Panthers ahead 57-50 with three minutes left.

Kentucky Wesleyan led 58-56 with 22 seconds to play, and Bria Wright and Jennifer Walker-Crawford each hit four clutch free throws to preserve the victory.

Inside the box score
It was a balanced scoring attack all afternoon long from the Panthers, who posted three players in the double figures scoring column.

Senior Jennifer Walker-Crawford scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting and also brought in three rebounds. Senior Brittany Wells also scored in double figures and finished with 11 points. Wells has scored in double figures in every contest so far this season.

Freshman Jasmine Shelt scored a season-high 10 points on 4-5 shooting from the floor. Shelt also drained both of her three-point field goals.

Keelie Lamb also scored nine points, and collected five rebounds and two blocks.

Guards Shayla Wright and Sydney Morabito finished with seven and five points respectively. Bria Wright and Addie Reimbold each posted four points and four rebounds.

Kentucky Wesleyan did most of their damage from free throw line, where they knocked down 21-29 attempts.

The Panthers shot 40 percent from the field and forced the Tritons into committing 23 turnovers. KWC converted on 16 points scored off of turnovers.

KWC also scored 28 points inside the paint, and out-scored UMSL's bench 24-3.

Kentucky Wesleyan will return home to the Sportscenter for a Monday evening contest against NAIA opponent Fisk.  Tip-off is currently set for 6 p.m. CT.
