Kentucky Wesleyan fell to 1-5 on the season after falling 49-7 in Natchitoches, Louisiana on Saturday evening at FCS opponent Northwestern State.
The Demons took advantage early of good field position, as they capitalized with back-to-back touchdowns on their opening possessions to take a 14-0 lead.Â
Northwestern State would go on an eight-play drive to push the lead out to 21-0 early into the second quarter.
Kentucky Wesleyan pulled together a strong 13-play drive covering 75 yards to get on the board. Josiah Israel ran it in from two yards out to cut the deficit down to 21-7 midway through the second quarter of play.
KWC got the ball back late in the quarter, and moved the ball down field deep into Demon territory, but ran out of time. NSU led 21-7 at the break.
In the second half, both defenses held their own in the opening possessions to start the half. Northwestern State would break through, and scored their fourth touchdown of the day to open up the lead to 28-7. The Demons continued to use their balanced attack through the air and ground to their advantage. NSU would score another touchdown in the final minute of the third to extend the game out to 35-7.
The Demons scored twice more in the fourth, while KWC was unable to find the end zone in the second half of action.
Quarterback Damarcus Smith finished 16-29 for 179 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Josiah Israel led the Panthers' running game with 58 yards and a score. Wide receivers Travion Tucker and Keelan Cole recorded 69 and 60 receiving yards respectively.
Tim Patterson generated a team-high nine total tackles on defense. Vasco Billberry registered a team-high seven solo tackles. Ty Martin-Miles posted two tackles for loss, and seven total tackles in the contest. James Todd also finished with seven tackles in the game.
Kentucky Wesleyan will play on the road again next Saturday at UNC-Pembroke. The game is set for a 1 p.m. CT start. The Panthers defeated the Braves at home last season at Steele Stadium, 39-31.
