Kentucky Wesleyan (1-7) will travel to New York to Alfred State on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play. The Panthers are coming off of a 70-14 loss at home to No. 11 Ashland from last weekend. Saturday's game is set for a noon CT kickoff.
Head Coach Brent Holsclaw briefly discussed last week's loss against Ashland. "My hats are off to those guys. They are a really well coached and sound football team, and we weren't on our A game either. When you are playing an opponent like that, you can't afford to be off of your game.
The big challenge for us this week is to get everyone prepared and keep everyone's heads on straight for our game at Alfred State."
Sophomore Mike McGee made his KWC debut at quarterback last weekend. He finished the contest 16-23 for 292 yards and a touchdown.
"Damarcus Smith is currently day-to-day, and Mike McGee is a worthy backup quarterback, who has the potential to have a tremendous career here at Kentucky Wesleyan. When you are trying to pick out the bright spots in a game like last weekend, Mike was one of the defining bright spots of our team. One big positive for our team last week, is that we never turned the ball over." Holsclaw stated.
The Panthers defeated Alfred State 69-8 last season in Owensboro. Holsclaw gave his in-depth insights on the matchup. "They are a scrappy group. They tackle very well, and run to the football. They've also played a tough schedule and have a similar record to us. We've had a very good week of practice, but they've got a ton of good athletes who can make plays, so we will have to answer the bell. We've got a lot to prove this weekend."
Lastly, Holsclaw spoke on his message for the team, and how he expects the group to respond. "We've got to hit a re-set button. We aren't the only team in this situation, and when you look at strength of schedule across the D2 landscape, ours would be top-five if not higher. We have a nice football team, and we are headed in the right direction. We just need to get back to the basics and get that energy and fire that we had back in August."
Live coverage will be available for Saturday's game.
