Women’s basketball falters in first conference contest to Cedarville

The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team dropped their first road conference contest of the year to Cedarville by a score of 67-55 on Monday afternoon in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers were coming off a dramatic overtime win on Saturday against Ursuline. With the loss, Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 7-5 (1-1, G-MAC) on the year.

It was a tight game early on in the opening quarter. Brittany Wells gave the Panthers a brief lead after connecting on layup to make the score 11-9. Kentucky Wesleyan stayed active on the offensive end and scored seven points in the final 1:30 of the quarter to keep the Panthers ahead 18-13.

In the second, Kentucky Wesleyan managed to only score seven points in the quarter. After Jennifer Walker-Crawford scored a basket to put KWC ahead 20-16, Cedarville went on a 12-0 run to reclaim the lead at 28-20. The Panthers would score the final five points of the quarter, but still trailed 28-25 at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets would control the last seven minutes of the third quarter. After it was a 36-33 game, Cedarville got hot on offense, and built their largest lead of the game at the time at 50-41 after converting a three point attempt in the final minute of the quarter. Walker-Crawford and Bria Wright both hit double figures in scoring in the third period.

In the final quarter, Cedarville continued to carry all of the momentum. Kentucky Wesleyan continued to struggle offensively, and scored only four points in the first nine minutes of the quarter. Cedarville meanwhile took advantage of the Panthers' offensive woes, and added on their lead. The Yellow Jackets largest lead of the contest was at 15, after Kayla Linkous made a free throw to put Cedarville ahead 62-47. The Panthers scored twelve points in the final three minutes of the contest, but ultimately fell short.

Brittany Wells led Kentucky Wesleyan in scoring for the fifth consecutive game with 13 points. Wells has reached double figures in scoring six times this season. Jennifer-Walker Crawford also finished with 12, along with Bria Wright, who collected 10 points. Walker-Crawford has finished in double figures scoring eight times this year. Walker-Crawford, Wright, and Jade Mills-Harris each finished with team-high five rebounds apiece. The Panthers shot just 32% from the floor throughout the game, and committed 20 turnovers. Cedarville scored 18 points off of KWC turnovers.

Kentucky Wesleyan will continue their conference slate with a trip to West Virginia on Jan. 14, against Alderson Broaddus at 4:15 CT.
