Women’s basketball cruises past Salem International

The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team defeated Salem International 79-36 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday evening at the Sportscenter. The Panthers dominated the game from the opening tip until the final buzzer sounded. With the win, Kentucky Wesleyan improves to (10-6, 4-2 G-MAC) on the year. The Panthers are now 6-1 in home games at the Sportscenter.

Right from the beginning in the first quarter, Kentucky Wesleyan attacked the basket on offense and was able to produce easy baskets. Katie Miller knocked down two three point field goals in the quarter, and the Panthers jumped out to a 14-3 lead. Salem would cut into the deficit right before the quarter ended at 16-10.

The Panthers opened the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 24-10. Kentucky Wesleyan collected several points in the second quarter off of free throws. KWC also forced Salem into committing multiple turnovers, which also led to easy baskets. Bria Wright scored seven points in the quarter for Kentucky Wesleyan, as the Panthers led 33-15 at the break.

Kentucky Wesleyan continued to roll in the second half. The Panthers started the third quarter on a 15-6 run to open the lead even more at 48-19. Salem International had just 23 points going into the fourth quarter of play.

In the fourth, it was all KWC in the first five minutes. The Panthers started the quarter again on a huge run. Kentucky Wesleyan went on a 16-3 run to lead 71-29. Kentucky Wesleyan recorded its largest margin of victory on the season at 43 points when it was all said and done. The Panthers held Salem to just 24% shooting from the field.

The Panthers out-rebounded Salem 52-28, and scored 28 points off of turnovers. The Tigers committed 28 turnovers throughout the game. KWC also produced 49 bench points, and shot 26-33 from the free throw line.

Katie Miller and Sydney Morabito both led Kentucky Wesleyan in scoring with 11 points apiece. Brittany Wells also reached double figures for the Panthers with 10 points in the contest. Erin Dorn dished out a team-high three assists. Codie Drake and Shayla Wright made the most of their minutes as they both finished with season single game-highs in points. Drake finished with six points and six rebounds, and Wright tallied eight points. Six Panthers recorded at least five rebounds.

Kentucky Wesleyan is back in action on Saturday, when they play host to G-MAC opponent Ohio Valley. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
