Box Score The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team fell to Trevecca 54-49 in Nashville on Monday evening in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers had not played a game in over a week before tonight's matchup. Kentucky Wesleyan's two game winning streak comes to an end, as they fall to (9-6, 3-2 G-MAC) on the year.
The Panthers got off to a slow start on offense, as they shot 4-17 from the field as a team in the first quarter. Kentucky Wesleyan also struggled to hit shots from long range, as they shot only 1-9 from three point range in the first half. The Panthers just did not have it tonight offensively, as they struggled from everywhere on the floor to knock down shots. Trevecca connected on 4-9 three point attempts in the first half, and were able to stay out in front on KWC throughout the duration of the first half, leading 29-22 at halftime.
Early on in the second half, Trevecca scored the first four points of the third quarter to extend the Trojans' lead to 33-22. Things weren't looking good for the Panthers, but they refused to go down without a fight. Kentucky Wesleyan would go on a 13-0 run in the final seven minutes of the quarter to lead 35-33.
Jill Jones knocked a three to cut the lead to two at 33-31, and then later made two free throws to even the contest at 33-33.
Jade Mills-Harris gave the Panthers the lead after hitting two free throws late in the quarter.
The game remained tight in the fourth quarter. Both teams went at it back and forth, and the game was dead even at 39 with five minutes to play. Brittany wells scored four straight points, and gave KWC the lead at 41-39 after hitting two crucial free throws. That would be the last time Kentucky Wesleyan would hold the lead.
Jennifer Walker-Crawford tied the game back up at 43 with under three minutes left, but Trevecca would score the next five points to go back on top. Kentucky Wesleyan was unable to make a comeback in the second half this time, even though they played solid defense for a majority of the half. Trevecca knocked down their free throws in the closing minutes to pull away 55-49. Trevecca out-scored KWC 20-10 on second chance points.
KWC as a team shot 17-63 from the floor, and just 3-28 from three point range. The Panthers however did shoot a perfect 8-8 from the foul line in the second half.
For the ninth time this season,
Brittany Wells led Kentucky Wesleyan in scoring with 13 points on the night.
Jill Jones and
Jade Mills-Harris both contributed seven points apiece.
Bria Wright recorded a team-high 12 rebounds, and
Jennifer Walker-Crawford also added seven rebounds.
The Panthers will be back in action at the Sportscenter on Thursday when they play host to G-MAC opponent Salem International. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
