Box Score The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team defeated Ursuline 76-75 in OT in Pepper Pike, OH on Saturday afternoon in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.
Brittany Wells converted on the game winning layup to give the Panthers their first conference game victory. With the win, Kentucky Wesleyan improves on the year to (7-4, 1-0 G-MAC).
It was not your ideal start to a basketball game. In the first quarter, Ursuline jumped right out of the gates with a 12-0 lead with 5:38 to play in the first quarter. However, Kentucky Wesleyan weathered the storm and closed the gap on the Arrows as the first quarter ended with KWC only trailing by five at 19-14.
As the second quarter continued, both teams quickly traded baskets with Ursuline still ahead 27-26. The Arrows would end the quarter on a 21-8 run in the final five minutes to open up a fourteen point halftime lead at 48-34.
In the second half, Kentucky Wesleyan began their comeback. The Panthers went on a 10-0 run in the first five minutes, and after
Sydney Morabito's layup, the lead shrunk to 48-44. However, the Arrows would not give up the lead easily, as they maintained a three point cushion at 53-50 heading into the final quarter.
Back and forth both teams went offensively in the final quarter of play.
Jennifer Walker-Crawford gave KWC its first lead of the game at 63-62 after completing a three point play the old fashioned way. That lead wouldn't last long, as Natalie Koenig knocked down a three to put the Arrows up 65-63 with one minute to play. Still, Kentucky Wesleyan didn't go away.
Erin Dorn hit a jump shot with 19 seconds left to tie the game and force the overtime period.
In overtime, it looked like Ursuline was going to win the game after scoring the first six points of the period to put the Arrows up six. Ursuline still led by six with two minutes left, and then the Panthers would go on a 7-0 run to end the contest.
Bria Wright scored on a layup off of a steal to cut the lead to one at 75-74 with 41 seconds left.
Jill Jones came up with a huge steal with nineteen seconds to play, to give the possession back to Kentucky Wesleyan.
Brittany Wells scored the game winning layup as the clock expired.
The Panthers had four players crack double-figures in scoring.
Jennifer Walker-Crawford and
Brittany Wells each scored 15 points for KWC.
Katie Miller added a single-game season-high 13 points, and
Bria Wright tallied 10 points for the second time this season.
Jade Mills-Harris also collected nine points throughout the game. Walker-Crawford also recorded 10 rebounds making it her first double-double of the season.
Jill Jones led the team with four assists, and also pulled in eight boards. KWC shot 44% from the floor as a team.
Kentucky Wesleyan will be back in action on Monday, as they travel to face G-MAC opponent Cedarville on the road at 4:30 p.m. CT.
