Box Score

The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team rallied for yet another second half comeback win this season. The Panthers defeated Davis & Elkins 64-61 on Saturday afternoon in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play in Elkins, WV. The Panthers have won two straight conference contests and are now (9-5, 3-1 G-MAC) on the year.

Looking straight from the box score, you would never have thought that Kentucky Wesleyan would have won this game. It was a tale of two halves, and KWC played top notch defense in the second half and had exceptional free throw shooting throughout the whole game, which played a big role in their victory.

It was a slow start early on for the Panthers.  In the first, KWC shot just 4/14 from the floor. Brittany Wells provided six points for Kentucky Wesleyan in the quarter. Davis & Elkins shot over 50% in the quarter, and extended their lead, after the game was tied at 14-14 by going on a 7-0 run to end the quarter to lead 21-14.

D&E stayed hot in the second quarter offensively, and continued to build on to their lead. The Senators were shooting over 60% from the field, and had the Panthers reeling. A three pointer from Sydney Turner put Davis & Elkins up 35-22 on Kentucky Wesleyan halfway through the quarter. The Senators connected on 5/11 three point attempts in the half, while the Panthers were just 1/12 from deep.

Kentucky Wesleyan's first half woes ended with a dismal 8/34 shooting from the floor. Brittany Wells scored 12, and Asia Coates also tallied seven points to lead the Panthers in the first half. Kentucky Wesleyan shot 93% from the free throw line on 13/14 attempts, which was one of the few bright spots in the first half for the Panthers.

Kentucky Wesleyan started the second half off much better.  Kentucky Wesleyan began to claw their way back into the game, and started the third on an 18-8 run to take the lead 48-47 with three minutes left in the quarter. The Senators also began to cool down offensively, but still led KWC 53-52 heading into the fourth. Brittany Wells and Asia Coates continued to be the main facilitators for the Panthers.

The Panthers stepped up even more in the fourth quarter defensively and held D&E to just eight points throughout the entire quarter. Kentucky Wesleyan's largest lead of the contest came after they took the lead at 64-61 with just nine seconds to play.

KWC held Davis & Elkins to only 22 points in the second half. KWC only shot 18/67 from the field, but connected on 25/30 free throws. The Panthers collected 19 points off of Davis & Elkins turnovers, and also forced 29 turnovers from the Senators.

Brittany Wells led Kentucky Wesleyan in scoring with 21 points. Wells shot 8/9 from the free throw line in the contest. Its' the eighth time Wells has led the Panthers in the scoring column this season. Asia Coates also added 10 points, which was a season single game- high for her. Bria Wright led the Panthers with a team- high seven rebounds.

Kentucky Wesleyan will next be in action back at the Sportscenter, when they host Trevecca on Jan. 23rd at 1 p.m. CT.
