Panthers split on day one versus Davis & Elkins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Looking to bounce back from a non-conference loss to USI, Kentucky Wesleyan baseball returned to the field for their final Great Midwest Athletic Conference series of the regular season, facing Davis & Elkins.

Matt Pobereyko would win game one for Kentucky Wesleyan, improving to 9-1 on the season and leading the Panthers (30-16/ 13-9) to an 11-1 victory.  Johnathan Eberhardt and Troy Paris both homered in the victory.  Kentucky Wesleyan would fall in game two, 8-4.

GAME ONE – Kentucky Wesleyan 11, D&E 1 (9 innings)

Led by Dennon Koziol's 5-for-6 performance at the plate, Kentucky Wesleyan came away with an 11-1 victory to open the series with the Senators of Davis & Elkins.  The Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Senators tied the game in the bottom half.

Kentucky Wesleyan took the lead on Eberhardt's home run in the second, and poured on the offense in the sixth, tallying seven runs in the inning, including RBI's from Koziol on a double, Paris on a triple and Eberhardt's second RBI on a single.

Paris' home run in the eighth brought the score to its final margin of 11-1.  Pobereyko was brilliant again, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing only five hits and one run with a walk and eight K's on the game.  For the season, Pobereyko now sits just two strikeouts shy of becoming the first Panther ever to strikeout 100 batters in a year.

Nate Verst finished the final 2.1 for Kentucky Wesleyan, allowing a hit with two K's.

GAME TWO – D&E 8, Kentucky Wesleyan 4

Kentucky Wesleyan was able to score quickly again in game two, taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first.  Davis & Elkins, however, had a large response in the bottom half.

The Senators would score four runs in the first, two in the second and two in the fourth and rolled to an 8-4 victory in the second game.

The series continues tomorrow with the final two games.  The G-MAC tournament begins next Wednesday at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
