Panthers drop first doubleheader of Florida Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Having not played for two weeks, the Kentucky Wesleyan baseball team resumed their season with their annual spring trip to Orlando, Fla.

KWC dropped to 4-4 overall with an 8-5 defeat at the hands of Ashland, followed by a 3-0 loss to Saint Joseph's College.  The loss to SJC was the first time Kentucky Wesleyan had been shutout this season.

Mike Hellmueller went 3-8 with a pair of runs scored in the doubleheader and Kyle Emig had a hit in both games, with an RBI and a run scored against Ashland.  Andrew Moralez, Austin Tibbs and Evan Mohr all threw the ball well in the Saint Joseph's game, with the latter two not allowing a run in their outings.

GAME 1 – Ashland 8, KWC 5 (9 innings)

After coming back to tie the game, KWC was unable to take the lead, as Ashland scored four runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings to come away with an 8-5 win.  The loss ended the Panthers' three game winning streak and dropped them to 4-3 on the season.

Ashland jumped to a lead early, scoring one run in the first and two in the third to grab a 3-0 lead after three innings.  KWC would get on the scoreboard in the fourth on a Chad Klein single that scored Hellmueller to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Ashland made the score 4-1 in the fifth, but the Panthers would respond, scoring three times in the sixth to tie the game at four.  Hellmueller led off the inning with a single and he crossed the plate on a double by Dennon Koziol to make it 4-2.  The next batter, Klein, singled in Koziol to make it 4-3.

Two batters later, Troy Paris doubled and subsequently moved to third on a passed ball.  Paris would score on an RBI single by Kyle Emig to tie the game in the top of the sixth.

Ashland responded, taking the lead back in the seventh with a single run.  They would add three more in the seventh to lead 8-4, but Josh Galvin drove home Emig in the ninth to bring the score to the final margin of 8-5.

Matt Pobereyko started for KWC and went 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned) with two walks and five K's to get the loss.  Jordan Collier and Tyler Walsh both pitched in relief, with Walsh pitching a perfect eighth inning in his appearance.

GAME 2 – Saint Joseph's 3, KWC 0 (9 innings)

The bats went quiet in the second game of the day as the Panthers were only able to muster five hits in the loss.  Andrew Moralez started and went five innings, allowing only five hits and three runs, but he walked four and struck out six in the loss.  Austin Tibbs and Evan Mohr combined to throw four innings and allow just two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
