Softball collects doubleheader wins

Kentucky Wesleyan knocked off visiting Salem International, 6-1 and 8-0, in Great Midwest Athletic Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon to sweep the four-game series.
 
In the opener, Mackenzie Weedman went three-for-four at the plate as she drove a game-high three runs. Amber Pendergraft also collected three hits and scored two runs.
 
Pendergraft put the Panthers on the scoreboard first with an RBI single sending Jaclyn Parker across the plate. Samantha Marksbury followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Courtney Lockwood for the 2-0 in the second inning.
 
Lockwood knocked in KWC's third run on a single to bring Weedman home in the third.
 
The Fighting Tigers recorded their only run in the fourth.
 
Weedman's RBI single drove in Pendergraft to push the advantage to 4-1. Weedman came back in the sixth with a two-run double with Marksbury and Pendergraft going home to settle for the final score.
 
The Panthers had 11 hits to Salem International's four.
 
Josalyn Ress (4-3) went the distance in throwing three strikeouts, one walk and allowing four hits in seven frames.
 
The second outing was a non-conference contest where the Panthers blanked the Fighting Tigers, 8-0, in five innings.
 
Kaci Ovelgoener knocked in three runs while Lockwood and Kayla Norris drove in two.
 
Ovelgoener brought home Marksbury on a sacrifice fly in the first for the 1-0 lead.
 
The Panthers exploded with four in the third. Pendergraft hit a sacrifice fly sending Alexis Chapman home. Ovelgoener produced a two-run RBI with Marksbury and Norris adding the second and third run. Lockwood followed with an RBI single scoring Weedman to complete the four runs.
 
KWC came back in the fifth to end the contest with three runs. Lockwood started with a single driving Ashley Crooke to the plate. Norris registered a two-run RBI to deliver Lockwood and Parker for the final two runs to end the game.
 
Jessica Carmon (1-1) threw a one hitter as she faced 16 batters and struck out one.
 
The Panthers (9-6, 3-0 G-MAC) play at league foe Alderson Broaddus next Friday and Saturday.
