Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Taking a six game winning streak into their first Great Midwest Athletic Conference series of the year, Kentucky Wesleyan baseball faced some adversity, having to move the series from their field down to Trevecca's field, while still being the home team.
Dennon Koziol drove in the lone run in game one, and
Matt Pobereyko dominated the Trojans, throwing eight innings of three hit ball with a career high 12 K's in a 1-0 win in game one. KWC was unable to hang on to a 3-2 lead in game two and ended up falling 5-3 to see their winning streak come to an end at seven games.
GAME 1 – KWC 1, TNU 0 (9 innings)
Dennon Koziol's RBI single in the fifth inning to score
Jeremy Cline gave
Matt Pobereyko all the run support he needed in the contest. The KWC starter struck out a pair of batters in both the first and second innings and ran into trouble in the third before forcing a groundout and a flyout to keep it tied.
Two more Pobereyko strikeouts in the fourth and fifth gave him eight for the game and setup Koziol's fifth inning heroics. Cline singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and stole second during the at bat of
Tyler Howard.
Cline would move to third on a single from Mike Hellmueller and scored on the very next hitter when Koziol brought him in. The Panthers failed to cash in more, but it was all that Pobereyko needed.
Four strikeouts in the next three innings gave Pobereyko his 12 for the game, working out of a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh and getting a double play ball to wriggle out of trouble in the eighth.Â
Justin Kittel came in for the ninth, got the first two hitters on a ground out and a K, than got into some trouble.
Kittel hit a batter then allowed a base hit, but retired the final batter of the game, fittingly, on a strikeout to seal the win. For Pobereyko, it was his fourth W on the season and the third save for Kittel, as the two KWC pitchers combined for a season high 14 K's.
GAME 2 – TNU 5, KWC 3 (7 innings)
Having now won seven in a row, KWC sent
Matt Lasley to the hill in game two, going for number eight. Neither team scored in the first two innings, before Trevecca tallied a pair of runs in the third to go up 2-0 after three.
The Panthers responded in the fourth when
Chad Klein singled in
Johnathan Eberhardt to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Eberhardt would tie the game in the fifth on a single with the bases loaded that scored
Josh Galvan and
Troy Paris would give KWC a 3-2 lead with a sac fly that scored Hellmueller.
Lasley was unable to hold the lead in the sixth, as Trevecca tied the game at 3 and Lasley was replaced by
Jordan Collier. The Panthers were unable to push a run across in the sixth and had a chance to hold Trevecca in the seventh.
With two outs in the inning, Kristinus of TNU hit a fly ball to right field that was misplayed, allowing a pair of runs to score giving Trevecca a 5-3 lead. Koziol would single with one out in the seventh, but that was all KWC could muster, seeing their winning streak end at seven, 5-3.
Collier was the loser in game two, throw a hitless 1.2 innings of relief, surrendering two runs (one earned), with two walks and a K. Lasley threw 5.1 innings in the start, allowing six hits, three runs and one walk with two strikeouts while receiving a no-decision.
