Box Score Outscoring Salem International 13-2 in overtime, Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball came away with a 63-52 win tonight in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.
Jordanne Gambill had 13 points to lead KWC (17-8/12-3) in her second to last game at the Sportscenter. SIU dropped to 0-27 on the season with the loss.
Erin Dorn opened the scoring for the Panthers with a jumper 11 seconds into the game. Salem would add a free throw before
Asia Coates' layup made it 4-1 with 18:25 left.
KWC would get out to a 7-3 lead after a three from
Bria Wright at the 16:06 mark in the first half. Salem had the only basket over the next 3:08, until Wright's layup with 12:58 left in the half made it 9-5 Panthers.
The Panthers finished the half on a 14-6 run to go into the locker room leading 23-11 at the half.
Both teams found it hard to score opening the second half, but SIU would tie the game at the 8:31 mark on a jumper. KWC retook the lead on a
Jennifer Walker-Crawford free throw 26 seconds later and the score favored the Panthers 33-32.
KWC would stretch the lead to as many as eight, but the shooting went cold and their last regulation field with 1:49 left to make the score 49-42. Salem International would come back to tie the score on a pair of free throws with a tenth of a second left in regulation and the Panthers saw overtime for the first time this season tied at 50.
KWC wasted no time scoring in the overtime as Coates made a three-pointer to give the Panthers a lead for good at 53-50. Salem responded to cut the lead to 53-52, but that would be their only overtime field goal.
KWC would score the final 10 points of the basketball game and finish with a 63-52 win. The Panthers shot 35 percent from the floor in the game and won the rebounding battle 46-30.
Walker-Crawford was the only other player for KWC in double figures with 10 points and
Bria Wright just fell short of a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
KWC plays their final regular season game on Saturday against Ohio Valley. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. CT.
