Panthers take season opener from North Greenville, 6-4

Box Score
Josh Galvin's two run fifth inning home run and Austin Tibb's near perfect work out of the bullpen were all Kentucky Wesleyan baseball needed to win their season opener.

Galvin's home run gave KWC a 6-0 lead in the fifth and Tibbs relieved starter Matt Pobereyko in the sixth, getting out of a jam with the tying run at the plate, to help the Panthers take their opener 6-4.  Pobereyko earned the win, going 5.2 innings and allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) while striking out eight and issuing two walks; Tibbs would pick up the save, pitching the final 3.1 innings and allowing just one hit with three K's.

The Panthers got on the board early in the first.  With Dennon Koziol on second, Kyle Emig hit a ground ball to shortstop, and the ball was misplayed, allowing Koziol to score and moving Emig to second, giving KWC a 1-0 lead through one.

KWC would score three times in the second.  Chad Klein reached on an error and moved to second two batters later on a single by Mike Hellmueller.  Klein would cross the plate on a double by Josh Vance to make it 2-0 Panthers.

The next batter, Tyler Howard, brought home Hellmueller with an RBI groundout, and Koziol followed that up with an RBI single to score Vance and put KWC up 4-0 in the second.

Neither team would tally a run in the next two innings.  Galvin's homer with two outs in the fifth provided KWC with their final runs and gave the pitching staff a cushion.

Pobereyko gave up four in the six, and Tibbs entered with a runner on first and two out.  After moving the runner to second on a wild pitch, Tibbs was able to strike out Staton to end the threat and help the Panthers hang on to a 6-4 lead.

Tibbs was nearly unhittable from there, allowing only a single in the eighth that was subsequently erased by a fielder's choice and a double play.

Koziol finished the game with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Jonathan Eberhardt also chipped in a multi-hit game.  Galvin finished with two RBI's and Howard and Vance both added runs batted in as well.

The Panthers and North Greenville finish their three game series with a doubleheader tomorrow.  First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
