The six-game winning streak of the Kentucky Wesleyan men's basketball team came to a screeching halt on Sunday.
The No. 23 Panthers turned the ball over 13 times in the first half, setting the tone for a 104-87 loss at the hands of homestanding Northwood at Riempa Arena in Midland, Michigan.
KWC head coach Happy Osborne, who witnessed his club fall behind by 26 points on three occasions in the second half, was not pleased afterward.
"This is an embarrassing afternoon for us," Osborne said. "Our effort on defense was terrible. I love these guys, but we stunk today.
"It's just a very disappointing loss. We let Northwood shoot open 3s and you can't do that. If you don't play harder and don't outwork people, you're going to pay the price, and that's what happened in this one."
The Panthers (9-2) actually started well, building a 14-5 lead in the early minutes, but the Timberwolves dominated the contest the rest of the way — outscoring KWC 48-21 to assume a commanding 53-35 advantage by intermission.
KWC turned the ball over only five times in the second half, but the damage was done.
"This was maybe an eye-opener for us," Osborne said. "We've got to be more ready to play, and that's my responsibility; I'll take the hit for this.
"We need to gather ourselves. I believe in our guys, and we'll roll up our sleeves and get back to work.
"This is part of growing a program, but when you have seven seniors the time to do it is now."
Northwood (7-3), which shot 54 percent from the field, was led by guard Maurice Jones, who scored 21 points and dished a game-high nnie assists. Fellow guard Dylan Langkabel added 20 points and nailed 4-of-5 shots from 3-point range. Jermaine Myers and Zach Allread each scored 16, and Nick Spitzley added 14.
The Timberwolves drained 14-of-26 shots from beyond the arc (54 percent) and drilled 26-of-27 free throws (96 percent).
The Panthers shot 48 percent from the floor, including 10-of-18 from 3-point range (56 percent), and were 25-of-36 from the foul line (69 percent).
Kentucky Wesleyan is idle until Dec. 31, with a 2 p.m. New Year's Eve game against visiting Brevard at the Sportscenter. The three-game homestand continues on Jan. 2 against King and concludes on Jan. 6 versus Oakland City.
