Women’s hoops falters in second half to Findlay

The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team dropped their first contest of the year, after losing to Findlay 80-54 in their second game of the Pops Duncan Classic in Nashville, TN. After playing a tight first half against Findlay, the Panthers (1-1) were unable to match the Oilers second half performance, where they outscored Kentucky Wesleyan 46-20.

The Panthers hung right with Findlay in the first quarter of the game. The score went back and forth as Kentucky Wesleyan held the largest lead of the quarter which was early on at 5-2. The Oilers led 17-16 once the quarter was complete.

The score remained close early on in the second quarter, until the Oilers opened up a 31-22 lead. The Oilers continued to hold the lead at 34-26 with 1:45 left in the quarter, but the Panthers went on an 8-0 run to close the gap and tie the game at 34 apiece heading into halftime.

The third quarter is where Findlay put the game away for good. After Jennifer Walker-Crawford hit a three to give the Panthers a 37-34 lead, Findlay went on a 22-0 run, and led 56-37. Kentucky Wesleyan was outscored 32-8 in the quarter. The Oilers led 66-42 heading into the final quarter of the contest.

The story was similar to the third quarter during the fourth quarter of action. The Oilers continued to add on to their lead, and opened up the quarter on a 9-2 run. Findlay's largest lead of the game was at 27, when it was 80-53 with just under three minutes to play. Kentucky Wesleyan was out-rebounded 52-35, and shot just 29% from the floor. The Panthers also shot only 40% from the free throw line.

Findlay was led by Karli Bonar in scoring with 19 points. Three more Oilers cracked double figures, as Lynsey Englebrecht dropped 17 points, Haley Horstman added 12, and Anna Hintz, who posted a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

For the Panthers, Jennifer Walker-Crawford collected a team-high 18 points, off 7-12 shooting from the floor. She also knocked down four three point shots. Katie Miller scored nine points, and Erin Dorn also added seven. Jade Mills-Harris and Jill Jones both brought in four rebounds, and Sydney Morabito recorded two assists.

Kentucky Wesleyan will next play against Central State on Friday, November 20th at the Exum Center in Frankfort at 5 p.m. CT.
