Volleyball grabs first G-MAC win

Kentucky Wesleyan picked up their first Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) sweep of Ursuline on Friday night at Jones Gymnasium. The Panthers improve their record to 7-15 (1-4 G-MAC) on the year. They also continue their winning streak to five consecutive matches.

In the first set, the Panthers led early and held on all the way through the set. The Arrows rallied and cut the lead in the game to a one-point deficit at 19-18, but Kentucky Wesleyan prevailed and went on to win the set 25-22.

In the second set, the Panthers developed a steady lead, but Ursuline made an attempt to comeback in the set. They closed the gap from 14-8 to 16-15, but once again Kentucky Wesleyan came up big in the most important points of the set to win the set 25-19.

In the third and final set, Ursuline came out and took the first point. From then on, Kentucky Wesleyan took the lead back and built a 10-5 lead. The Arrows this time rallied and took the lead at 14-13. They increased their lead to 16-14, but the Panthers came charging back and re-grabbed the lead at 19-17. Kentucky Wesleyan would hold onto the lead in the set for good, as Nikki Jenkins finished off the Arrows with a match-winning kill to win the set 25-23.

Jenkins owned the net yet again while registering 13 kills throughout the match. Sarah Swenson posted 31 assists, and Nicole Venema added 11 digs. Elizabeth Gober notched seven kills, and Autumn Harris recorded 6 kills respectively. Kentucky Wesleyan ended the match with 38 kills, 37 digs, and 35 assists. They also logged four service aces.

The Arrows were led by Abbie Fabo who had 23 assists. Sammie Marcum completed the match with seven kills and 10 digs. Makalya Windau registered six kills and 10 digs for the Arrows. Ursuline also recorded 30 kills as a team.

The Panthers will look to continue their winning streak with another match at home tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. against Cedarville.
