KWC escapes Ohio with a split

Rebounding from a tough loss to Cedarville on Thursday, Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball finished their Ohio road trip this afternoon when they faced Central State.

Asia Coates and Jennifer Walker-Crawford combined for 36 points and KWC escaped Central State with a 66-65 win.  The win put the Panthers at 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference while Central State dropped to 3-11 and 1-5.

KWC led 31-23 at halftime, after taking the lead for good with 12:32 left in the first half on a three by Jordanne Gambill.  The Panthers kept the lead at a manageable distance until six minutes left in the game.

Katie Miller made a pair of free throws with six minutes left to make the score 61-51.  Central State cut the lead to four with an 8-2 run over the next 3:03 and KWC got the lead back to six with 2:06 left on a layup by Jade Mills-Harris.

Central State got the lead back down to four before Coates split a pair of free throws to make it 66-61 with two minutes left.  A pair of free throws and a layup made the lead only one with 23 seconds left.

KWC could not break the Central State pressure with 11 seconds left and turned it over.  The game ended when Walker-Crawford drew a charge with .4 on the clock to secure the 66-65 win.

Coates led all scorers with 19 points and Walker-Crawford chipped in 17 points for the Panthers, while also leading the team in rebounds with eight.  The Panthers grabbed 42 boards for the game and outshot CSU 37-33 from the field.

KWC returns to the court on Jan. 22 for a visit from G-MAC foe Davis & Elkins.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
