Kentucky Wesleyan open their inaugural season of Great Midwest Athletic Conference play with a sweep of visiting Ursuline on Friday with 5-2 and 6-1 victories at Foster Field.
Josalyn Ress (5-4) tossed a three-hitter in the first contest where she held the Arrows hitless until the seventh inning. She struckout seven and allowed one walk in 26 batters faced.
Kaci Ovelgoenner started the Panthers scoring in the first when she connected on a RBI double to drive
Kelsey Miller to the plate.
Kyli Smithson followed in the second with a single to send
Jessica Carmon home for the second run.
In the third,
Mackenzie Weedman produced the third run with a sacrifice fly scoring Ovelgoenner. Ashley Crookes scored on a fielder's choice by Carmon and Weedman came across the plate when Ress reached base on a throwing error for KWC's final two runs in the fifth. UC closed the game with two runs in the top of the seventh.
The Arrows started the closer with a run in the first followed by Weeman's RBI single advancing Ovelgoenner home to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning. Miller scored in the third on a sacrifice fly by Crooke.
The fifth saw KWC explode with four runs. Kyli Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by
Amber Pendergraft. Ovelgoenner then hit a RBI single pushing Weeman home. Carmon produce the final two runs with a double knocking in Weedman and Ovelgoenner.
Casey Smith (2-6) earned the win with three strikeouts, two walks in seven innings.
The Panthers (11-11, 2-0 G-MAC) host Cedarville at noon today.
