Playing on the third and final day of the Charger Chillout, hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville, the Kentucky Wesleyan softball team fell to Northwood 10-0 and to West Georgia 9-0 on Sunday. The Panthers are 2-4 on the season.
KWC held the Northwood offense to a three and out to start the game. In the bottom of the inning the Panthers had senior
Alex Baumgart in scoring position after posting a double and then stealing third, but KWC was unable to get on the board.
The Timberwolves got on the board in the second inning, as Stacey Klonowski scored on a single by Natalie Lampman.
Northwood extended its lead in the third scoring two additional runs to make it a 3-0 game. Senior
Kelsey Miller was left stranded on third in the bottom of the inning for the Panthers after stealing second and then reaching third on a wild pitch.
The Timberwolves went ahead 4-0 in the fourth and earned six runs in the fifth to take the game 10-0 in five innings.
Miller posted two hits in three at bats for the Panthers. Junior
Ashley Crooke had six putouts, while Weedman recorded four assists.
Junior
Josalyn Ress pitched 4.1 innings allowing 15 hits, while not giving up a walk and striking out one in 27 batters faced.
KWC then played West Georgia in its final game of the Charger Chillout. West Georgia built a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after its first batter posted a triple and then scored during the Wolves next at bat on a single.
Baumgart was again left stranded on third in the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch to take first and then she stole second and third.
Defense dominated during the next three innings as neither team was able to get in scoring position. West Georgia then scored seven unearned runs and one earned run in the fifth inning to go ahead 9-0. KWC was held to a three and out in the bottom of the inning.
Junior
Amber Pendergraft recorded the Panthers only hit against the Wolves in two at bats and defensively had two assists. Sophomore
Mackenzie Weedman also had two assists for KWC. Sophomore
Kaci Ovelgoenner had four putouts.
Freshman
Casey Smith allowed nine hits and walked two, while striking out two in 26 batters faced.
The Panthers return to action in the Southern Indiana Spring Tournament in Evansville, Ind. beginning on Saturday, February 22. KWC opens the tournament against Illinois-Springfield at 11:00 a.m.
