Opening day for the KWC softball team took place at the Charger Chillout, hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville, with an 11-3 win over Stillman, before falling to Bellarmine 10-2.
Stillman built a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning following a single that scored Jessica Mathews. The Lady Tigers left a runner on third.
Senior
Kelsey Miller tied the game at one apiece in the bottom of the first after stealing home. Classmate
Alex Baumgart gave the Panthers the 2-1 lead after scoring on sophomore
Mackenzie Weedman's at bat.
KWC built a 5-1 edge in the second with senior
Kyli Smithson and freshman
Ashlea Holt scoring on Miller's triple. Miller advanced home on Baumgart's bat.
The Panthers extended their lead in the third, as junior
Ashley Crooke made it home on a double by Smithson. Junior
Josalyn Ress made it a 7-1 game after advancing home on junior
Amber Pendergraft's at bat. Smithson scored KWC's final run of the third on a double by Holt.
In the fourth the Panthers went ahead by 10 runs. Ress scored Weedman and sophomore
Kaci Ovelgoenner after recording a double. Smithson knocked in the final run for KWC with a single that scored Crooke.
In the top of the fifth Stillman scored on an error and a sacrifice fly to put the final score at 11-3.
Smithson finished the game with three hits, two runs and two RBI's. Crooke posted four putouts in the victory and Pendergraft had two assists.
During the Panthers second game of the day, KWC built a 2-0 advantage in the third over Bellarmine. Pendergraft put the Panthers on the board after hitting a double before scoring on a single by Ovelgoenner. Miller also scored on the single by Ovelgoenner after reaching first by being walked. The Panthers left a runner stranded on third base.
The Knights tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning following a single by Ally Foster.
Bellarmine collected six runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 8-2 over the Panthers.
KWC was unable to answer in the sixth, as the Knights scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the game 10-2.
Ovelgoenner finished with one hit and two RBI's in three at bats. Crooke posted a team best eight putouts, while Pendergraft had a team high four assists.
The Panthers return to action in the Charger Chillout tomorrow against Ohio Dominican at noon and versus Miles at 4:00 p.m.
