Baseball sweeps season opener at Limestone

Kentucky Wesleyan swept host Limestone, 5-3 and 2-1, in the Panthers season opener in Shelby, NC on Saturday night.

In the first game, KWC jumped on the Saints, 4-0, in the top of the first inning.

Connor Petschke came across the plate on a balk for the first run. Mark Hagedorn followed with a sacrifice fly RBI to bring Lucas Ray across the plate for the second tally. Reid Walker then hit a two-run single to score Aussie Light and Dennon Koziol.

Limestone came back with a run in the bottom of the inning to settle on a 4-1 first. The Saint's scored their second run in the third.

Light hit a RBI single in the fifth to drive Lucas Ray home again in the fourth for the Panthers fifth and final run. Limestone scored on a passed ball in the sixth for the final 5-3 score.

Andrew Moralez (1-0) earned his first win by pitching five innings allowing seven hits and striking out three. In relief, Tyler Emberton threw one inning and one strikeout and Noah Boswell threw two innings with two strikeouts to earn the save.

In the nightcap, both teams were scoreless for the first four innings.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard first when Koziol hit a double then scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. KWC came back in the fifth for their second score when Walker hit a ground-out RBI to bring Josh Vance home.

The Saint added one in the bottom of the fifth to close the lead to the final score, 2-1, as neither team scored in the sixth and seventh innings.

Matt Lasley (1-0) picked up his first win by throwing a complete game. He collected five strikeouts, one hit and one walk in facing 24 batters.

The Panthers (2-0) concluded the four-game series with Limestone on Sunday.
