KWC drubs Ohio Valley

Box Score

Kentucky Wesleyan College had no trouble on Saturday finishing off its West Virginia road trip with authority.

The Panthers took control early and handled Ohio Valley 99-76 in Vienna, W. Va.

Lonnie Hayes led KWC in a big way with 23 points, hitting 7-of-11 shots from the floor and 8-of-9 free throws.

The points were a big factor for KWC, but coach Happy Osborne focused instead on what Hayes did on the defensive end of the floor.

"He had 12 deflections to go along with six steals," Osborne said on his postgame radio show.

Osborne felt like KWC's defensive pressure was important in getting the game going toward the Panthers quickly in the first half.

"We were very efficient offensively, but we also had 30 deflections at halftime, and that really helped us get our offense going in the first half," Osborne said.

KWC forced 24 Ohio Valley turnovers and the Panthers made 15 steals. KWC scored 31 points off turnovers and was also dominant inside with 38 points in the paint.

KWC was up by 60-33 at the half, when it hit a whopping 69 percent from the field, making 20-of-29 shots. KWC hit 35-of-56 for the game for 62.5 percent. Those numbers helped KWC run its record to 14-7, 8-1 in the G-MAC.

Ohio Valley was held to 35.4 percent (23-of-65) shooting from the floor. David Sinickas led Ohio Valley with 14 points. Ohio Valley fell to 3-14, 2-6 in the G-MAC.

KWC also got 20 points from Ken-Jah Bosley, who made 8-of-9 shots from the floor in 22 minutes.

Devin Langford scored 13 points and Donovan Johnson added 12 points.

A margin of victory this large allowed Osborne to use a lot of players. Logan O'Bryan and James Herzog each got nine minutes for the Panthers.

Dominique Dawson played for 22 minutes as he continued to work his way through an ankle injury. Dawson scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds.

"It was good to get Dom back, he was trying to run himself back into shape," Osborne said.

The Panthers continue on the road, but it will be much closer to home, going to Oakland City on Wednesday night.
