KWC hopes to keep rolling against Thorobreds

Game notes

Fresh off a three-game road sweep of Ohio Valley, Salem International and Illinois-Springfield, Kentucky Wesleyan will be shooting for its fourth consecutive victory on Tuesday when it plays host to Kentucky State.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Sportscenter.

"We need all the fans we can get in the Sportscenter for the Kentucky State game," said second-year Panthers head coach Happy Osborne, whose squad has not played at home since dropping a 70-65 decision to Truman State on Nov. 29 in the finals of the KWC Holiday Tournament.

"Our team has some confidence and momentum going into (the KSU) game, and then we've got the Quincy tournament on the weekend. We want to keep playing well and getting better right on through Christmas."

KWC was sharp in almost every area in its convincing 80-61 win at Illinois-Springfield on Sunday — shooting well from the field (48 percent) and the free-throw line (82 percent), forcing the Prairie Stars into 21 turnovers, and winning the battle of the boards (32-29).

Morever, the Panthers turned the ball over only 10 times.

Likely starters for Wesleyan include 6-5 junior forward C.J. Blackwell, 6-8 junior center Zay Henderson, 6-1 junior guard Marcus Fillyaw, 6-2 senior guard Hikeem Stewart and 6-1 sophomore guard Ken-Jah Bosley.

Stewart, Blackwell and Bosley each scored 12 points to pace the Panthers on Sunday. Fillyaw added 10 points.

Kentucky State is led by 6-3 senior guard Ulysses Thomas, who leads the Thorobreds at 16.8 points per game, while adding 3.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

Also expected to start for coach Antwan Banks' club are 6-6 senior forward Tim Bates (7.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg), 5-9 point guard Quentin Henderson (5.3 ppg, 4.5 apg), 6-10 sophomore center Julius Barton (5 ppg, 3.3 rpg) and 6-1 senior guard Jawan Dumas (2 ppg, 2.3 rpg).

Kentucky State opened the season with a 103-80 victory over St. Catharine, but has since been defeated by IU Southeast (81-74), Southern Indiana (84-75) and Central State (67-64).

The Thorobreds have not played since Nov. 25.

Last season, Kentucky Wesleyan pulled out a 78-77 victory over Kentucky State at the Exum Center in Frankfort.
