Box Score Still searching for their first win, the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team returned home tonight for a meeting with Berea College, a team they hadn't played since 1979.
Bria Wright's double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds was more than enough for KWC, who never trailed in the game and cruised to an 81-65 victory.Â
Jennifer Walker-Crawford led the team in scoring with 18 points,
Katie Miller added 15 off the bench and
Jordanne Gambill rounded out the double-figure scorers with 14 of her own in addition to Wright's 11.
Gambill opened the scoring with a layup 45 seconds in, and the Panthers would stretch the lead to as much as 10-0 in the first 3:40 of the game after
Haley Cook hit a three. Berea would cut the lead to six before KWC stretched back out to 10 on back-to-back layups by Gambill and
Haley Cook.
The lead got chipped down to one with 7:09 left in the first half, but the Panthers stretched it to six with 5:19 left. KWC would lead at halftime 39-26.
Berea scored first in the second half on a free-throw, but Gambill stretched the lead to 14 with a jumper to make it 41-27 with 19:04 to play. The lead never got below 13 points again, stretching to its largest margin of 20 after a Miller three-point play with 4:04 left.Â
KWC emptied their bench with two minutes to go, and
Ciera Woods and
Jill Jones would score with free throws, and
Sydney Morabito would hit a three. The free throw by Jones were the final points of the game for the Panthers, setting the score at 81-65.
The Panthers shot 41 percent from the floor, tied their season high with eight three pointers and shot a season best 73 percent at the free throw line, sinking 19. They also won the rebounding battle 51-38, while holding Berea to 33 percent shooting from the floor and one made three pointer.
Next up for KWC is a visit from St. Joseph's on Sunday. Tip-off from the Sportscenter is at 1 p.m. and the game can be heard on WKWC 90.3 FM.
