Preview: Women's Basketball returns home with sights set on first win

A tough weekend in Nashville kept the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team winless on the season.

This Thanksgiving weekend, KWC plays twice, looking to return to the win column.  Tomorrow night, the Panthers will face Berea College, with tip-off set for 6 p.m. CT and, in a rare Sunday game, KWC faces former GLVC foe St. Joseph's at 1 p.m. CT.

"Overall, this past weekend was a positive experience for our players," said co-head coach Nicole Nieman.  "It was good for our players to see what the competition is like in the region and where we are as a team.  We just need to be on the attack more at the end of games."

Jordanne Gambill leads the Panthers in scoring, averaging 11.8 ppg.  Jennifer Walker-Crawford is the leading rebounder, grabbing 6.3 rpg and Bria Wright has nine assists on the season for a 2.5 apg average.

As a team, KWC shoots 39 percent from the field, 28 percent from the three-point arc and 59 percent at the free throw line.  Defensively, they are allowing 41 percent from the floor, 30 percent from the three-point arc and opponents shoot 75 percent at the free throw line.

Berea enters Wednesday 1-3 on the season.  Johnesha Warren is the leading scorer, averaging 20 a game for the Mountaineers, while also leading the team in assists with seven per game; Alexus Calhoun is the leading rebounder with 10.5 rpg.

St. Joseph's is 1-3 on the season. These two teams met at St. Joe's last year, with the Pumas leaving victorious 77-69. Kalea Parks leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 23.3 and 7.8 respectively and Katie Harold leads the team in assists at 3.5 per contest.

When asked about the two games this week, Nieman replied: "We don't know a lot about Berea.  St. Joe is going to be a tough opponent for us.  They are a good team and are really athletic."

The Panthers head to West Virginia for their next game on December 4 against Ohio Valley.
