Following a three game hiatus from G-MAC action, the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team pulled off an 82-74 victory over Cedarville on Thursday. The Panthers are 8-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
Cedarville opened up the scoring converting on a jumper at the 19:36 mark.
The Panthers took their first lead at the 17:59 mark on a layup by senior
Karly Rhoads to put the score at 3-2.
The Yellow Jackets regained the lead on the ensuing possession and built a three point advantage before the Panthers were able to tie the score at eight apiece on a three pointer by junior
Jordanne Gambill with 14:46 remaining in the first half of play.
Freshman
Erin Dorn gave the Panthers their largest lead of the first half at the 11:57 mark after making a layup to make it a 16-10 game. Cedarville responded by scoring the next six points tying the game one minute later.
The Panthers held the lead for the remainder of the half and went into the break with a 33-28 advantage.
In the opening half KWC shot 30 percent from the field and 92 percent from the free throw line, while the Yellow Jackets went 42 percent from the floor and 4-4 from the line.
Cedarville started the second half by scoring the first eight points to go ahead 36-33 with 17:14 to go in the game.
Karly Rhoads ended the Yellow Jackets run by knocking down a three point basket.
Lauryn Robinson put the Yellow Jackets ahead 50-45 with 10:26 remaining in the game, but senior
T'Essence Phelps and
Karly Rhoads each hit a layup to pull the Panthers within one of Cedarville.
Phelps connected on a layup and made a free throw attempt to tie the game for the seventh time at 55-55 with 7:31 to go.
During the Panthers next possession sophomore
Jade Mills-Harris made a layup to give KWC the 57-55 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets took their final lead of the game at 68-67 with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
After the Panthers regained the lead at the 1:51 mark on two made free throws by Gambill, KWC went on to win the game by its largest lead at 82-74.
KWC went 38 percent from the floor in the game and hit 90 percent of its attempts from the free throw line. Cedarville made 47 percent of its shots from the floor and went 75 percent from beyond the stripe.
Gambill recorded a career high 23 points in the win, while senior
Kourtney Rhoads posted a career best five steals. Phelps had a team high eight rebounds and four assists.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 4 against G-MAC foe Central State at 1:00 p.m.
