Panthers continue win streak beating Illinois Springfield in five sets

The KWC volleyball continued their win streak on Sunday, Sept. 7 by beating the host school at the Illinois-Springfield Invitational. After dropping the first set the Panthers won the next two sets before having to win the fifth and final set against Illinois-Springfield to open the season 3-0.

During the first set the Panthers scored the first five points, but the Prairie Stars came back to tie the set at nine apiece. Following a ball handling error the Panthers went ahead 14-10. Illinois-Springfield was again to come back to tie the set at 14 all. The two teams went back and forth in scoring following the tie before the Prairie Stars held the advantage at the end of the set taking the 25-23 win.

In the second set the Panthers again went ahead 5-0, but this time KWC was able to hold the momentum and took the set 25-18.

The Prairie Stars came out strong in the third set going ahead 5-1. Junior Chelsea Brothers tied the set at nine apiece after recording a kill. KWC used a few 3-0 runs to take the third set, as well as the 2-1 advantage in the match.

After Illinois-Springfield took the fourth set the Panthers built a 12-6 advantage in the fifth and final set before taking the set 15-13.

Junior Bridget Johnson led the Panthers in digs with 14 and classmate Hannah Hudnall posted 15 digs. Freshman Summer Alford and Brothers each finished the match with two total blocks.

The Panthers finished with a .247 attacking percentage, five service aces and 8.5 blocks.

Brothers was named the Most Valuable Player of the invitational. Johnson and Alford were selected to the all-tournament team.

Action resumes for the Panthers on Friday, September 13 when KWC travels to Monticello, Ark. to participate in the Hampton Inn Invitational. KWC plays West Alabama in the opening game of the tournament at 11 a.m.
