Volleyball falls to Southern Arkansas, beats tournament host Arkansas-Monticello

On the final day of the Hampton Inn Invitational the Kentucky Wesleyan volleyball team fell to Southern Arkansas 3-1 before sweeping tournament host Arkansas-Monticello. KWC is 5-2 on the season following the split.

The Panthers scored the first two points of the first set, but Southern Arkansas scored the next six points. Southern Arkansas held onto the lead for the remainder of the game taking it 25-14.

During the second set the score remained close the entire time. KWC scored four straight points late to go ahead 24-21.Freshman Summer Alford scored the final point of the set to give the Panthers the 25-22 win.

In the third set, the two teams combined for more than 120 total attacks. KWC was able to build a 17-8 advantage, but the Mulerider battled back and tied the score at 22 apiece. Eight more ties accord before Southern Arkansas won 32-30.

The fourth set unfolded much like the third set. The Panthers eventually took a 10-6 lead, but the Mulerider tied the game at 11. Both teams battled until the end with Southern Arkansas pulling it out in the end taking the game 29-27.

KWC ended the match with a .099 attacking percentage, five service aces and seven blocks.
Alford recorded 17 kills and sophomore Linda Albrecht had 39 assists. Junior Hannah Hudnall posted 24 digs and classmate Chelsea Brothers had two blocks.

Against Arkansas-Monticello the Panthers used a 6-1 run early in the first set to pull away from the Blossoms and take the game 25-19.

The Panthers carried the momentum into the second set, using a few Blossoms errors to open with a 5-0 lead. Junior Rae Garvison scored two of the Panthers final four points in the set to help give KWC the 25-17 victory.

The Blossoms only lead of the third set came on the opening point. KWC scored the next seven points and never looked back winning 25-15.

In the win the Panthers recorded a .217 attacking percentage, 8 blocks and seven service aces.

Sophomore Dallas Zimmerman led the team in kills posting eight and she had a team high three blocks. Albrecht finished with 26 assists and Hudnall collected 10 digs.

The Panthers play their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. against Bellarmine.
