Playing in the opening day of the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by Arkansas-Monticello, the Kentucky Wesleyan volleyball fell to West Alabama 3-2 before knocking off Missouri Southern 3-1. The Panthers moved to 4-1 on the season.

West Alabama grabbed an early 5-1 lead in the first set and held the lead until they recorded an attack error to put the score at 13 apiece. Freshman Summer Alford gave the Panthers their first lead of the set on the following point with a kill.

The Panthers built a four point advantage after taking over the lead. The Tigers tied the score at 21 all, but KWC took the 1-0 lead in the match by winning the first set 25-23.

During the second set West Alabama took the lead from the start and took the set 25-19. The Panthers looked to have recovered early in the third set, jumping out to a 5-3 lead, but the Tigers went ahead 7-6 and held the momentum for the remainder of the game, taking it 25-20.

KWC had a strong showing in the fourth set going ahead 8-2 before winning 25-16 on a kill by junior Chelsea Brothers.

The fifth set was close from start to finish with the largest lead being two points at 6-4 and the final score of 18-16 in favor of West Alabama.

The Panthers ended the match with a .175 attacking percentage, two service aces and seven blocks.

Sophomore Dallas Zimmerman tallied 15 kills and classmate Linda Albrecht had 19 assists. Junior Hannah Hudnall grabbed 20 digs.

Against Missouri Southern, the Lions jumped out 4-1 over the Panthers in the opening set, but KWC made a run of their own to tie the score at six all. The Panthers didn't look back from that point on to take the set 25-20.

The second set had five ties before Missouri Southern pulled away to take the match 25-19.

KWC regrouped to take the third set 25-18 and fought off the Lions in the fourth to take the game 25-20.

The Panthers posted a .220 attacking percentage in their afternoon match with nine service aces and three blocks.

Brothers completed the match with 13 kills. Alford had a team high six service aces and Hudnall finished with 14 digs. Albrecht ended the match with 39 assists.

KWC returns to action tomorrow in the Hampton Inn Invitational playing Southern Arkansas at 9 a.m. and then facing the tournament host Arkansas-Monticello at 11:30 a.m.
