Softball takes one of three

Kentucky Wesleyan lost to Tiffin 2-1 in the opening game of the Southern Indiana Spring Tournament in Evansville on Saturday.
 
Sophomore second baseman Amber Pendergraft (Henderson, Ky. / Henderson County HS) hit a single to score junior pinch runner Kyli Smithson (Tell City, Ind. / Tell City HS) in the bottom of the fifth for the 1-0 lead.
 
Tiffin came back in the top of the seventh to tie at 1-1. The Panthers closed the inning with three straight ground-outs.
 
In the top of the eighth, the Dragons took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule to bring across the game-winning run. KWC responded with runners at second and third before two straight force outs to end the contest.
 
Senior Ashlee Winstead threw eight innings and posted three strikeouts allowing five hits in receiving the loss.
 
The Panthers bounced back on Sunday morning to defeat Tiffin 8-1.
 
KWC scored one run in the first, third and fourth before exploding with three in the fifth for the 6-0 lead. The Dragons produced their only run in the bottom of the sixth.
 
The Panthers closed out in the seventh with two runs to settle the final tally.
 
Junior first baseman Meagan Sallee (Central City, Ky. / Muhlenberg County HS) went four-for-four at the plate producing two runs and scoring one.
 
Junior centerfielder Alex Baumgrat (Boonville, Ind. / Boonville HS) went three-for-five at the plate, knocking in two runs and scoring two.
 
Pendergraft and freshman shortstop Mackenzie Weedman (Owensboro / Apollo HS) went two-for-three. Pendergraft had one RBI and scored one.
 
Sophomore Josalyn Ress (Tell City, Ind. / Tell City HS) threw seven innings with one strikeout giving up 10 hits to earn the victory.
 
In the second contest, KWC fell to Ohio Dominican 4-1.
 
ODU scored one in the bottom of the first before KWC responded in the fifth to tie the game with their only run by Smithson. The Panthers scored on a three-run homer in the fifth to surpass KWC.
 
Weedman collected two of KWC's six hits.
 
Ashlee Winstead pitched six innings giving up five hits and four runs with two strikeouts in the loss.
 
KWC (2-7) open their Great Lakes Valley Conference season at Illinois-Springfield on Saturday at noon.
