Lauren Goffinet scored a game and season-high 22 points in leading Kentucky Wesleyan to a 71-62 victory over host McKendree in Great Lakes Valley Conference play in Lebanon, Ill., on Thursday night.
The victory tied the 1992 school record for most league wins with 12. KWC also clinched a berth in the GLVC Championship Tournament.
Goffinet connected on eight-of-11 from the field including two-for-three from beyond the arc plus grabbed four rebounds.
Karly Rhoads added 14 points and
T'Essence Phelps chipped in 13 while pulling down a team-best seven rebounds.
Jordanne Gambill had five rebounds and
Bianca Barton produced six assists.
The Panthers started with an eight-point deficit, 20-12, at the 8:02 mark before grabbing the lead for good with an 11-2 run with 4:38 remaining for the 23-22 advantage. KWC led 33-30 at intermission.
KWC slowly built into a double-digit advantage recording their largest margin at 16 points, 57-41, with 8:28. The Bearcats cut the lead under 10 in the last 42 seconds before settling on the final score.
The Panthers made 18-of-28 free throws compared to McKendree's eight-of-12. KWC' defense forced 23 turnovers on 10 steals
KWC (17-7, 12-4 GLVC) hosts arch-rival Bellarmine on Saturday at 5:15. Following the contest, seniors
