Panthers fall to Saint Joseph’s 77-69

Playing in its fourth straight road game the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team dropped a 77-69 decision to Saint Joseph's Monday night in Rensselaer, Ind. The Panthers are 4-2 on the season as they head into G-MAC play on Thursday night.

KWC scored the first basket of the game on a jumper, but Saint Joseph's scored the next four points to take the 4-2 advantage with 18:43 on the clock.

The Panthers regained the lead after senior Kourtney Rhoads converted on a layup and a three pointer to put the score at 7-4 with 17:57 to go in the half.

The Puma's went ahead 8-7 at the 15:06 mark on two made free throw attempts, but they were unable to hold onto the lead for long as senior T'Essence Phelps and Kourtney Rhoads each made a layup to put the Panthers up 11-8 with just under 14 minutes to go in the first half.

Saint Joseph's took the largest lead of the half by either team at the 4:50 mark going ahead 29-23, but KWC hit two straight three point baskets to tie the score at 31-31, the sixth tie of the game. Phelps then hit a jumper and a free throw shot to put the Panthers up 34-31 with 1:04 to go before the break.

The Puma's scored the final bucket of the half and went into intermission with the 35-34 lead.

KWC made 47 percent of its shots from the field in the first 20 minutes of action, 50 percent of its three point attempts and went 1-3 from the free throw line.

Saint Joseph's hit 41 percent of its shots from the field and 67 percent of its free throw attempts, while only converting on 1-8 from beyond the arch.

During the second half of play the Puma's built a 10 point lead, but the Panthers used a 9-0 run to pull within one of Saint Joseph's, at 53-52 with 8:35 remaining in the game.

The Puma's scored the next three points and KWC was unable to get any closer. Saint Joseph's built an 11 point advantage with 1:22 on the clock before taking the game 77-69.

Kourtney Rhoads recorded 23 points, four assists and two steals on the night. Phelps finished with 11 rebounds and four assists. Senior Karly Rhoads also had four assists and junior Jordanne Gambill had two assists.

KWC finished the game shooting 43 percent from the field, 35 percent from behind the arch and 60 percent from the free throw line.

Saint Joseph's converted on 50 percent of its shots from the field, 29 percent from three point range and 58 percent from the stripe.

The Panthers open Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play against Ohio Valley at home on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
