Panthers strong first half not enough in loss to Carson-Newman

Taking part in its final road game of 2013 the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team dropped an 83-71 decision to Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn. on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers fall to 6-3 on the season with the loss to the Lady Eagles.

Carson-Newman took a 4-0 lead to start the game, but KWC scored the next nine points with four different Panthers scoring to go ahead 9-4 with 16:49 remaining on the clock.

The Lady Eagles recaptured the lead at the 14:41 mark on a three pointer to go up 14-13, but they were unable to hold onto the lead for long, as freshman Erin Dorn made a layup on the ensuing play.

Senior T'Essence Phelps gave the Panthers a seven point advantage after converting on a layup to put the score at 21-14 with 12:05 remaining in the opening half.

Carson-Newman went ahead 25-23 following a made three pointer with 8:27 on the clock and the Lady Tigers final lead of the half came to a close after Dorn hit two free throws with 6:21 to go to make it a 25-25 game.

Freshman Asia Coates put the Panthers ahead 35-27 following two made free throw attempts with 3:36 remaining in the first 20 minutes of play.

KWC went into halftime leading 38-33 after shooting 46 percent from the field and 87 percent from the free throw line. Carson-Newman shot 34 percent from the field and 71 percent from the stripe in the opening half.

Junior Jordanne Gambill scored four straight points early in the second half of action to put the Panthers up 44-37 with 17:16 to go in the game, but the Lady Eagles scored the next seven points to tie the game 44-44 with just over 16 minutes remaining on the clock.

KWC held its final lead of the game at the 15:27 mark on a three pointer by Dorn, who put the score at 47-44.

Carson-Newman built a seven point advantage with 10:10 on the clock following a jumper to make it a 56-49 game.

The Lady Eagles largest lead of the game was 18 points.

KWC closed out the game scoring the final six points, including four made free throw attempts by Gambill to put the final score at 83-71.

The Panthers shot 42 percent from the field during the game and 84 percent from the free throw line. Carson-Newman converted on 44 percent of its shots from the field, 34 percent from beyond the arch and 77 percent from the stripe.

Phelps posted 10 points and 14 rebounds for KWC, while Gambill finished with 15 points and three assists. Dorn recorded three steals on the afternoon.

KWC closes out 2013 by hosting the Fairfield Inn Christmas Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21-22. The Panthers play the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Dec. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
