Playing in their season opener the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team came back from a one point halftime deficit to beat Asbury 70-63.
The Eagles scored the first two points of the game, but senior
Kourtney Rhoads answered with a layup on the ensuing possession to tie the game.
Asbury then scored the next five points to go ahead 7-2.
Senior
Karly Rhoads pulled KWC within two with 13:56 remaining in the half, putting the score at 9-7 following a layup.
The Eagles took an 11 point lead at the 10:41 mark, hitting two free throws to make it an 18-7 game.
Ko. Rhoads hit a jumper with 5:41 on the clock to put the Panthers within three at 20-17.
Senior
T'Essence Phelps converted on two free throws to pull the Panthers within one at 26-25. KWC took its first lead of the game on the ensuing play after Ka. Rhoads stole the ball and passed the ball to her sister Ko. Rhoads who made a layup with 1:30 remaining.
Asbury hit two free throws to close out the scoring in the first half, going into halftime ahead 28-27.
The Panthers hit 31% of their shots in the opening 20 minutes and 83% of their free throw attempts.
Asbury scored the first five points of the second half to extend its lead to 33-27.
Junior
Jordanne Gambill ended the Eagles run by converting on a layup.
The Panthers were unable to cut any further into Asbury's lead, until the 14:51 mark when Gambill hit two free throws to put the Panthers within three at 47-44.
KWC tied the score for the final time at 58 all after sophomore
Jade Mills-Harris hit two free throw shots at the 4:35 mark. Ka. Rhoads gave the Panthers their second lead of the game with just under four minutes remaining after hitting a three pointer to put the score at 61-58.
KWC ended the game with its largest lead of the game, winning 70-62.
Ka. Rhoads posted 22 points and four assists in the win to lead the way for the Panthers. Phelps opened the season with a double-double recording 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Panthers shot 40% from the floor and 80% from the free throw line for the game.
