The Kentucky Wesleyan volleyball team won the regular season G-MAC conference championship Saturday afternoon beating Cedarville in five sets. The Panthers, who are competing in the G-MAC for the first time this season, finished the regular season with a 24-6 overall record, while going 12-2 in the conference.
KWC built a 3-1 lead to start the match, but Cedarville went on a 6-1 run to take the 7-4 advantage. The Yellow Jackets held the advantage for the remainder of the set winning 25-21.
Sophomore
Dallas Zimmerman put the Panthers ahead 8-5 in the second set and Cedarville was only able to pull within two points on a couple of occasions before junior
Bridget Johnson recorded a kill to give KWC the 25-21 victory.
During the third set the Panthers used a 5-2 run to build a 9-5 lead, but the Yellow Jackets used a 6-1 run to take a 13-11 advantage. Sophomore
Nikki Jenkins posted a kill on the next point to put the Panthers within one. Cedarville eventually built a 17-13 lead following a kill and went on to win 25-19.
Cedarville took an early 2-1 lead in the fourth set, but the Panthers used a 3-1 run to take the 4-2 edge. Cedarville tied the score at 11 apiece following an attack error by KWC. The Panthers used a 6-1 run to go back ahead 17-12. The Yellow Jackets pulled within two at 21-19, but could not get any closer as the Panthers won 25-21.
In the fifth and final set Cedarville went ahead 9-5. KWC tied the score at nine all following an attack error by the Yellow Jackets. Freshman
Summer Alford tallied a kill to give the Panthers ahead 11-10 KWC scored the next four points to win the set 15-10.
Jenkins finished the match with a team high 17 kills, 18 digs and five service aces on the afternoon. Junior
Chelsea Brothers had five block assists and senior
Jordan Rickert had 47 assists.
The Panthers play #8 seed Central State on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the G-MAC tournament. KWC is hosting the G-MAC tournament, which runs from Thursday, Nov. 21 through Saturday, Nov. 23.
