Kentucky Wesleyan jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back as the Panthers defeated Southern Indiana 68-59 on Thursday at the Sportscenter to take sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division.
Lauren Goffinet scored game-high 17 points including 12 in the first half and
Bianca Barton had 15 points plus five assists.
T'Essence Phelps added 12 points, a team-best seven rebounds along with four assists.
Goffinet shot 7-13 from the field and 3-4 from three-point range and grabbed six rebounds. Barton and Phelps each made two three-pointers.
Following KWC's 10-point start, USI cut the lead to two at 14-12 with 10:45 remaining in the opening period. The Panthers then went a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes to widen the advantage to 14 and eventually to a 37-22 halftime score.
The KWC defense held USI to 28 percent (8-29) shooting in the first half as the Panthers shot 47 percent (7-15) from three-point range in the first half.
In the second half, the Screaming Eagles clawed back to within three with 6:27 left at 54-51. Goffinet hit a three-pointer to fend off USI's comeback at 5:42. KWC then outscored the Screaming Eagles 11-6 in the final five minutes for the final tally.
The Panthers made nine three-pointers and 13-19 free throws compared to USI's four treys and 9-14 foul shooting. The Screaming Eagles won the boards 44-38.
The Screaming Eagles Anna Hackert produced the game's only double-double with 14 points and 20 rebounds.
The Panthers (10-4, 6-1) play at Lewis on Thursday at 5:30.
