Kentucky Wesleyan captured one of their biggest upsets in history when the Panthers defeated No. 5 Indianapolis, 67-61, in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Thursday.
Lauren Goffinet led KWC with a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds. This marked the third time in four games Goffinet topped the Panthers in offense.
Bianca Barton added 12 points including seven-of-eight from the foul line, seven rebounds and four assists.
Karly Rhoads also had 12 points and
T'Essence Phelps grabbed seven boards.
The Panthers jumped out to a seven-point advantage at 9-2 three minutes into the game. UIndy forged back to take the lead at 14-12 with 10:13 remaining in the half.
KWC recaptured the lead with a short 6-0 run to go ahead at 20-14. They held on until 1:18 left when UIndy tied the contest at 24-all and again at the half 27-27. There were two lead changes and four ties in the period.
After the half, the Panthers slowly extended the lead to 13 at 47-34 with 13:04 and twice held off the Greyhounds when they cut the margin down to one four times in a four-minute span with the last at the 3:40 mark of the period
KWC moved ahead to a seven-point lead at 65-58 with 29 second left and held on for the final margin.
The Panthers made three more three-pointers (8-5), collected 19 offensive rebounds and produced 21 points off turnovers. Overall there were six ties and four lead changes.
Katy McIntosh posted the game's only double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for UIndy (11-2).
The victory placed KWC into a four-way tie for first in the East Division with Lewis, Southern Indiana and the Greyhounds at 4-1.
The Panthers (8-4) host Saint Joseph's (1-12, 0-5) on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
