KWC opens season tonight vs. Walsh

Game Notes

Kentucky Wesleyan College will face a familiar refrain when it takes Bullet Wilson Field for its season-opening football game at 6 tonight with Walsh.

"They're bigger, stronger and faster than us," KWC coach Brent Holsclaw said. "But the biggest guy doesn't always win the fight."
Holsclaw isn't sure how the Panthers will perform at Steele Stadium, but he thinks the game will definitely provide a blueprint for what they can and can not do early this football season.

"We kind of have gotten an idea of where we're at right now, but we will know a lot better by Friday morning," Holsclaw said. "There are a lot of questions that will get answered."

Will Barnes will get the starting quarterback nod, that much is for sure with the Panthers. The 5-foot-11 junior threw for 271 yards and a touchdown in seven games of part-time duty last season.

"We have all the confidence in the world in him," Holsclaw said.

There are several areas with KWC that Holsclaw has liked during preseason camp.

"There's really not a phase I don't feel good about," Holsclaw said. "We can run the football, we can pass, we've got some receivers, our defense is good, and we've got a good secondary.

"The problem we have is depth. Everything has improved from last year, we just don't have depth, and we're young. We've got 37 freshmen out of 85 players."

The Panthers are trying to bounce back from a 1-10 record last season.

Walsh is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and is located in North Canton, Ohio. It is coached by Jim Dennison, who was head coach at Akron for 13 seasons and is starting his 18th season at Walsh.

Walsh went 5-6 last season. It lost 20-17 in overtime to Notre Dame College. KWC beat Notre Dame 38-13 last year for its lone win. In another common opponent matchup last season, Walsh beat Urbana 22-20, and KWC was trounced 45-9 by Urbana.
