KWC looks to keep growing

Game Notes

The No. 7 Panthers will keep looking for that kind of growth as they head toward the last five games of the regular season.

Four of those games will be at home, starting tonight when Lewis visits the Sportscenter.

KWC scratched out a pair of 3-point victories when it went on the season-opening road trip in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, to Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis, during the first week of December.
KWC surrendered a pair of big leads at Lewis, and needed a 3-pointer in the final two seconds from Cardell McFarland to secure a 74-71 win.

KWC has improved greatly, fashioning an 18-3 record, 10-3 in the league, although it is now two games behind No. 1 Bellarmine in the GLVC East Division.

The Panthers have also had to adjust on the fly since the loss of  McFarland to a foot injury.

Anthony Young has maintained a solid presence in the middle and been the usual strong scorer and rebounder (20.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg) the Panthers have come to expect.

Young is the leading scorer in the GLVC and third in rebounding.

The Panthers have also gotten a lot more out of Brandon Johnson at shooting guard, and Kreig Oxley in his new role as point guard.

“Brandon has been doing a lot of things besides scoring, whether it's rebounds, steals or assists,” KWC coach Todd Lee said.

“Kreig has had to make the biggest adjustment, because he's gone from being an off guard to the point guard. But he played really well and has done a good job.”

A new dilemma that made itself known on the Indianapolis-St. Joe's swing was foul trouble for Dominique Dawson.

The 6-foot-8 sophomore only played 21 minutes in those two games because of  picking up eight fouls combined in those games.

“We've watched the film, watched all the fouls,” Lee said. “You pick up two pretty quick and you lose your aggressiveness. We can't have him playing 21 minutes and picking up eight fouls in two games.”

Lewis is led by Chris McClellan, a 6-1 guard who is one of three senior starters. McClellan is scoring 15.2 points a game for the Flyers, who are 13-8, 5-8 in the league. Ryan Jackson is a 6-2 guard who averages 12.2 points a game for Lewis.

“Their guards gave us trouble,” Lee said. “They've got a lot of seniors, they're not intimidated and they are a tough group.”
